The Vanguard Vaccination Project Features Art Caplan to Discuss the Legal Landmines Companies Will Encounter as they Mandate COVID-19 Vaccination for their Employees

The Vanguard Vaccination Project includes free videos, podcasts and articles for business and community leaders

NEW YORK, NEW YORK (8/4/2021) — Art Caplan, Head of the Division of Medical Ethics at NYU Langone Medical Center joins The Vanguard Network Principal, Ken Banta, to discuss the perspective of general counsel surrounding COVID-19 vaccination in the workplace on the latest episode of The Vanguard Vaccination Project.

The Vanguard Vaccination Project is a toolkit for leaders which includes short videos, podcasts, articles, and helpful tools, such as information on how best to communicate the vaccine imperative to your workforce based on their underlying attitudes towards vaccination. All of the materials can be found here.

“Business and community leaders are critical to protecting our society from Covid,” said Ken Banta, Founder and Principal of the Vanguard Network. “We gathered powerful stories from business leaders and reached out to our extensive network of experts in epidemiology, ethics and public health, and assembles these resources,” he said.

“These resources are free and we encourage all business and community leaders to use them to encourage vaccination and correct the misinformation that is all too common,” said Glenna Crooks, Ph.D., Principal of Global Vaccination Advisors.

Episode 8 features Art Caplan in a discussion of the legal landmines leaders could encounter when mandating vaccination in the workplace.

“We’ve been through this with mandates for other vaccines and we know the nuances very well. We can make it easy or hard to be exempted from a vaccine and stop short of threatening someone with their job. We can make the pathway hard and let people know that if they really want to be exempt, they can go down that road. It’s another nuanced area of behavior modification.”

Safe, effective COVID-19 vaccines are available and increasingly accessible, but vaccine hesitancy and resistance are profound barriers to achieving herd immunity. Without herd immunity, we will face resurgences of the disease, causing social, educational, travel, workforce productivity, and economic disruptions. Leaders of companies and organizations across the country can play an important role in encouraging vaccinations within their organizations and communities. The Vanguard Network, in collaboration with Global Vaccination Advisors, will play a critical role by providing tailored communications strategies and content for leaders of companies and nonprofits.
