SonALAsense, a biotechnology company focused on developing innovative treatments for cancer, recently announced the completion of its Phase 2 clinical trial of Sonodynamic Therapy SONALA-001 for recurrent glioblastoma in the first cohort of patients. The results of the study demonstrate the potential of SONALA-001 to improve survival outcomes for patients with recurrent glioblastoma.
Glioblastoma is a type of brain cancer that is notoriously difficult to treat. It is often resistant to traditional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, and the prognosis for patients with recurrent glioblastoma is particularly poor. SonALAsense’s SONALA-001 is a novel approach to treating glioblastoma that uses sound waves to activate a drug that is specifically designed to target cancer cells.
The Phase 2 clinical trial included 15 patients with recurrent glioblastoma who had previously failed traditional treatments. The patients were given SONALA-001 in combination with standard-of-care treatments. The results of the study showed that the combination therapy was well tolerated and that it had a positive impact on patient survival. Specifically, the median overall survival for the 15 patients was 12.7 months, which is significantly higher than the median overall survival of 6.9 months for patients with recurrent glioblastoma who receive standard-of-care treatments alone.
The encouraging results of this Phase 2 study demonstrate the potential of SONALA-001 to improve survival outcomes for patients with recurrent glioblastoma. SonALAsense is now planning to initiate a larger Phase 3 clinical trial to further evaluate the safety and efficacy of SONALA-001 in this patient population. If successful, SONALA-001 could become a valuable treatment option for patients with recurrent glioblastoma who have few other options.
